A Brief History of the Modern Travel Trail
Believe it or not, the history of the travel trailer or “caravanning” is rooted all the way back to the traveling Romani people or as most know them today – Gypsies. Primarily used as a means of transportation and not as a home, the trend continued for the culture until the early 19th century. They would later begin to utilize caravans as a place to live rather than sleeping in tents as they provided greater protection from the weather and could be outfitted with more modern amenities.
It was in 1880 when the Bristol Carriage Company produced the first 18 foot design, reminiscent of the company’s Bible Wagons, for Dr. W. Gordon-Stables who called the innovative contraption the “Wanderer.” Today, modern travel trailers can come with everything from garages, roof top patios, bay windows, fireplaces, offices hideaway beds – we’ll you get the idea.
