A Brief History of the Toy Hauler
As fiberglass body construction entered the scene in the U.S. in 1971, so did the Playpac. It was one of the first examples of what we refer to as a Toy Hauler Trailer today and was invented by Steve Whysel.
With the growing popularity of Volkswagen’s Bug, the Playpac was the answer for those who desired a hard-shell camper which could be pulled by smaller automobiles as well as still provide travelers with a private water closet, shower and the ability to sleep more than one person.
A modern, aerodynamic shape, along with a domed skylight designed by Industrial Designer Toshihiko Sakow helped make the Playpac an instant hit.
Throughout the years, additional manufacturers have jumped on the “Toy Hauler” ship, helping to bring consumers a wide selection of different models.
Coincidentally, many of the exceptionally light Toy Hauler Trailers can even be pulled by a motorcycle.
