A Brief History of the Fifth Wheel

Curiss Aerocar fifth wheel

A 1936 Curtis Aerocar. Aerocar is coined as being one of the first manufacturer of the fifth wheel motorhome.

The term “fifth wheel” actually originates from the early days of the automotive industry in connection with trucks.

Patented in 1919, the locking-jaw fifth wheel hitch has surprisingly seen very little change throughout the years.  Usually circular and utilizing a kingpin which fits in the center like an axle, the hitch was referred to as the fifth wheel despite the fact it is mounted horizontally.

Around 1927, well-known American aircraft designer Glenn Curtiss invented what would become the first commercially built FifthWheel/Travel Trailer – the Curtiss Aerocar Trailer. The model was licensed by the Detroit, Mich., based Aerocar Company of America,

Coupes or Roadsters had no problem pulling the trailer which had a special fifth wheel type hitch. Curtiss actually manufactured the trailers himself from 1929 to 1941. The trailers were also manufactured by license from Aerocar by Briggs Body Corporation of Detroit.

As Curtiss was an aircraft designer, the trailers were very aerodynamic in appearance. He felt by basing the design off airplane principals, the trailer would be both lightweight but durable enough to handle long trips. Additionally, because the trailer’s frame was originally made of wood and wire, the idea was travelers could tow one of the trailers safely at speeds up to 55 miles per hour.

During the early 1930s, a model such as the Aerocar would sell for about $5,000, meaning they weren’t affordable for most families.
