A Brief History of the Class C Motorhome
Popular since the early 1970s, the Class C motorhome is a favorite for family vacations. The introduction in the ’90s of a new chassis with greater carrying capacities allowed new lines of Class Cs to enter the snowbirding market.
The Class C motorhome is actually built on what is known as a cutaway van chassis. This means the entire front of the vehicle – including the engine, doors, dash, and cockpit area — is of the same general construction and appearance as a van or a pickup truck. The class C chassis has evolved from a standard road vehicle designed for family and commercial use and still has many of the built-in safety features normally associated with those types of vehicles.
While not everyone can afford a grandiose Class A motorhome, more RVers are considering the purchase of a Class C.
The Class C motorhome began growing in popularity in the 1970s. (Above) One of the industry’s early models, a 1978 Dodge Road Ranger.
