A Brief History of the Class B Camper Van

While the Class B motorhome roots date as far back as the early nomadic caravans, the biggest boom in the market perhaps came when Roadtrek jumped onto the scene.

It was 1974 when Jac Hanemaayer started pondering the idea of developing an RV for personal use. Although he favored the spacious room and comfort offered by a Class A or C motorhome, he wasn’t looking to become a weekend bus driver. With that, he decided to go after the Class B market.

Dismayed he was unable to find the comforts of a larger motorhome within the convenient and efficient size of a van, Hanemaayer designed one for himself and had it built by Fledgling Home & Park Vehicles. The camper van impressed him so much that afterwards he decided to purchase the company.

Following years of personal RV experience, Hanemaayer made the decision to completely redesign his product in 1980 which yielded the now famous, low profile roof, lowered floor and innovative three section floor plan.
