A Brief History of the Class A Motorhome
The year was 1953 when Ray Frank, who led two lives as a farmer and an engineer had a crazy idea: Why not build a house on a truck chassis?
Frank, considered by many to be the father of the modern Class A Motorhome, originally intended for his first creation to be used solely by his family’s personal use. However, after his first few trips down the road and taking it to area campgrounds, everyone who saw it began asking the questions: Where can I get one?
In 1958, Frank was able to raise enough capital was able to raise enough capital to open his own company, Frank Motor Homes, and by 1960, had built seven more based on the design of his first creation. After linking his company with Chrysler Motors in 1961, his motorhomes were sold under the “Dodge” brand name and the Class A Motorhome industry was launched.
Frank’s business was sold to PRF Industries in 1967 and then became the Travco Division of PRF. Later in 1979, the business was sold once again, this time to Clarence Fore’s Foretravel, Inc. Coincidentally, like Frank’s company Fore’s business had originated from a single coach which was privately made and meant for personal use.
Although his business sold, Frank would later have a huge hand in the development of the first Camper Van or Class B models.
Today, the Class A Motorhome industry has grown to include a wide variety of models its humble beginnings and include every luxury one could ask for. With a kitchen, full bath, separate bedrooms (depending on the floorplan), heating, air condition, running water, electricity, dining area, closets and entertainment centers; many Class A Motorhomes are even more luxurious than most homes.
